July is national ice cream month, and as I was eating a bowl of my favorite flavor, mint chocolate chip mixed with raspberry, my mind quickly went to all of the beautiful finishes, fabrics and interiors that coincide. Not only are pastels popular on the spring and summer 2014 runways, but you can find mint, strawberry, peach, lavender, pistachio, melon in all things interior. Suddenly, our favorite dessert has become our style and design inspiration!
Once reserved for beach houses, cottage interiors or nurseries, these hues are popping up in formal, casual, traditional and modern spaces across the country. These light and airy colors can also be found in appliances, electronics, tableware, flooring and wall-coverings. I recommend using them as accents with other dominant colors and patterns to bring out the hue in the contrast and create depth in the design. When used alone, pastels can create a soft glow and bring warmth and softness to any design. Whatever your inspiration or flavor, pastels can create a refreshing and clean space reminiscent of the 50s, taking us back to a time where ice cream truly was our inspiration.
