11 Questions with Hair + Makeup Stylist Lindsey Regan Thorne

We know no look is complete without hair and makeup that complement your personal style and highlight your favorite features. That’s why we tapped Charlotte’s own Lindsey Regan Thorne as our exclusive hair and makeup partner when we debuted our first-ever style edit this spring.

Read on to see how Lindsey got her start, the one thing she wishes more women knew about makeup, the songs she has on repeat on her Spotify playlist, and her favorite piece in the Peachy Capsule Collection.

Lindsey Regan Thorne, co-founder of Swan Beauty

Why did you become a makeup artist?

I went to college for interior design and worked several years for a global commercial interior and architecture firm. After a while, I learned that although I loved the collaboration, the intense highs, and the insane talent in the industry, my heart wasn’t made for corporate America.

I’ve always loved painting and art. When I graduated from college, I exchanged my art brushes for makeup brushes and started doing makeup for friends. That hobby turned into a career and I’ve never looked back.

I saw the immediate need for talent when I started doing makeup professionally and launched Be Pretty, now a team of hair and makeup stylists, in 2009. And then in 2020, Swan Beauty was born to deliver curated, personalized cosmetics and beauty products right to your door.

Favorite of-the-moment makeup trend?

I am loving the natural makeup look – thick brows, muted lips, and using bronzer on the eyes for a warm, glowy summer look.

And I will forever love a dramatic lash look. Mascara is one thing for me that will never go out of style!

The one thing in Lindsey’s makeup bag that will never go out of style: mascara.

What’s your personal style?

It totally varies day to day. Some days I feel like a soccer mom in my traditional blue and white printed sundresses, other days I am rocking a graphic tee and well-loved Converse sneakers.

In the summer, I love flowy dresses with big statement jewelry and sneakers. It’s become my uniform during the years as a makeup artist spending hours upon hours on my feet. I live for comfort!

Favorite timeless style advice?

As I have gotten older, I have realized less is more. In my beginning blogging days, I thought to be “fashionable” I had to follow every trend and over-accessorize myself. Now, I have come to appreciate quality over quantity and investing in clothes that make me feel confident.

No look of Lindsey’s is complete without a pair of big sunglasses.

Fill in the blank: No look is complete without ____________.

1) Mascara
2) Big sunglasses

What’s one thing you wish more of your clients knew?

There are no rules! You can break the rules! I can’t believe how many women think you can’t wear shimmer over the age of 40! I’m one year away from 40 and I can’t imagine life without a dust of shimmer over my eyelids and on my cheekbones! BREAK THE RULES!

“If my design style and fashion taste had a baby, this dress would be it,” says Lindsey.

What’s your favorite look in the Peachy Capsule Collection?

I can’t get enough of the Lola dress from Five One Five. I fell in love with it while I was doing beauty the day of the Capsule Collection runway show and snuck into the bathroom to try it on.

If my design style and fashion taste had a baby, this dress would be it! I am obsessed with all things blue and white, and this block print is perfection. I am living for the lightweight, cotton, block-print dresses that are so in style right now.

I would style this dress with a pair of sandals, a straw hat, and statement earrings for the perfect date night at the beach (my dream date).

What inspires you?

My sweet kiddos are my biggest inspiration.

For those who don’t know, we struggled for years with infertility. Our desire to have a family was met with heartbreak that I never could have prepared myself for, so finally being able to welcome Henry and Olive into the world changed my life in the best way possible. Every day they inspire me to live in the moment, brush off the small stuff, and chase my dreams. The unconditional love and encouragement my children have shown me is the most humbling gift I could ever receive!

A few other things that inspire me: magazines, coffee table books, and of course, stalking interior design accounts on Instagram.

Describe your design style.

I am all about elevated Southern traditional style – warm, inviting, and elegant! I love adding touches (some might say too many) of wicker and natural textures. I love the way they remind me of my happy place – the beach!

I also love patterns on patterns, wallpaper, and a good hanging plate wall. Since becoming a mom, I have realized the importance of filling our home with family and memories. I love layering family photos, art from Charlotte artists, and family heirlooms passed down from my grandmother. I am a very sentimental person and love when pieces in your home tell a story.

Lindsey was an interior designer before turning her passion for makeup into a career.

What pop culture are you loving right now?

Everyone who knows me knows my deep love for Grey’s Anatomy. I had never watched this show until quarantine and I am not proud to admit that I have now watched all 17 seasons multiple times.

I always have music playing in our home. This spring, I crowdsourced playlist suggestions from my followers and ended up with the perfect playlist. You can find it on Spotify!

What are your must-follow Instagram accounts?

Liz Joy (@purejoyhome)

I am such a huge fan of Liz Joy. While I love following Liz for her home and fashion finds, I most enjoy her Instagram stories. I feel like watching Liz talking on her stories is like having your own personal motivational speaker. She is so wise and reflective and has taught me so much!

Deena Knight (@candidlydeena)

I started following Deena years ago when she lived in Charlotte. She is an incredible designer who shares my love for coastal decor! Deena and her family recently moved to Martha’s Vineyard and I am dying for an invitation to come see their beautiful home!

Natalie Sheen (@thenatnote)

I seriously look forward to every single “Nat Note.” Natalie curates the most incredible mood boards with styles for women, children, and the home. I eagerly wait for her gorgeous newsletter to hit my inbox and have so much fun looking through her finds.

Aerin Lauder (@aerin)

By far my most favorite person on the ‘gram. Aerin Lauder is the style and image director at Estée Lauder and founder of AERIN. I swoon over every single thing she posts – seriously. I cannot wait to visit her store in the Hamptons when we take Swan Beauty on the road later this summer!
