Oliver’s Room Makeover

Some days it’s hard to get your teenager to decide on what he wants for dinner, so needless to say engaging in a convo about an entire bedroom makeover is no small feat.

Blair says “It was time to redo my youngest son Oliver’s room, but I knew I needed to bring in a professional. We consulted with interior designer Marisa Wilson, who specializes in bachelor pad design.”

Marisa says “The sole focus was on Oliver and his interests. It’s his personal space; we needed to incorporate all his hobbies plus space for studying, video gaming, his personal collections, and of course sleeping.”

“We were able to work with a few pieces Oliver already had, and we pulled in vintage nightstands from another room in the house that worked perfectly! But the big focus for the room was to update the bed.” says Marisa.

For the bed, Blair worked with Coley Home, ordering the incredibly easy-to-assemble Crown bed, with the Whitby headboard customized in dark blue Belgian linen and light gray piping.

Blair says “The bed came shrink-wrapped in beautiful boxes within two weeks. The assembly was so simple. We have ordered beds from other places and it was painful and took hours. With Coley Home beds, you don’t even need a screwdriver to quickly set them up!”

The bed was also the base for the color scheme. Marisa selected Benjamin Moore’s ‘Storm’ for the walls saying “The Coley bed frame has gray piping and the luxurious white Coley bedding essentials bundle also has gray detail, so we wanted to pull that out to other areas in the room. Gray is a nice neutral and ‘Storm’ is a great medium shade of gray. It has nice depth without being too dark.”

The wall color created the perfect backdrop to hang Oliver’s grandfather’s (Ray Farris) UNC Chapel Hill quarterback jersey. Marisa says, “That was the element that really made the design personal and I love that it has both sentimental value and cool factor.”

With 10′ ceilings and large windows, blackout curtains were a top priority for an improved night’s sleep. RH Teen room-darkening drapery ensures light enters the room only on Oliver’s command.

Blair says, “I love that by adding bedside lamps, in addition to the natural light, Oliver won’t have to rely on an overhead light as much.”

Marisa agrees saying, “Aside from the gorgeous bed frame, I like the touch of brass in the lamps. They add a fun modern touch and create a cool juxtaposition with the vintage nightstands.”

“The vibe is very textbook masculine. Oliver describes his style as ‘Nike prepster’ — he’s an athlete (basketball and track), not flashy, no wild patterns — so we kept the design simple and classic,” says Marisa.

Blair says, “Marisa’s design is actually ageless — for sure the room works for a teenage boy, but I think a man at any age would respond to this aesthetic.”
