Creative Possibilities with CIRCA’s Heather Smith

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jeff Herr

This was one of our favorite projects because the client is such a creative, talented, and trusting woman. A concert pianist and professional chef, she really gets into entertaining. Whether it be a small gathering of friends or the whole family, she thinks a lot about the occasion and the ambiance. Our goal was to create thoughtful, flexible spaces that would provide creative possibilities for any setting.

Instead of a traditional dining room, we decided to use this room more like a library, displaying books and many favorite objets d’art. The walls are covered in grass cloth for a handsome texture, juxtaposed with the silk slipcovered chairs. Similarly, the rock crystal chandelier contrasts with the Italian gilt wood torchieres. A nearby bar displays the homeowner’s collection of crystal decanters.

Between the dining room and lounge, the entry is short and shallow. We played up the drama and didn’t shy away from filling it up. An upholstered screen gave the illusion of height, and the mirror visually doubles the space. Beautiful upholstery gives the small space a sense of purpose. The center table offers a warm welcome with flowers and candlelight reflected in the antique-mirrored surface.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

As Art Director and Designer for Circa Interiors & Antiques, Heather Smith designs interiors that are creative and layered with details, with an emphasis on beautiful collected items, natural colors, and durable materials. Her work reflects the need for both stylish living and functionality for today’s busy families. An antiques lover, Heather combines a traditional aesthetic with minimum accessories to keep interiors grounded but young and edgy in spirit. Her travels influence her personal style as well as her design work that encompasses traditional homes, urban apartments, motor coaches, and private planes.

Heather has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from Winthrop University. She joined Circa in 2002 with experience in commercial design. Heather also serves as creative advisor for Lux Lampshades.
