Beauty Report: Reader Favorites

WRITTEN BY Lesley Holland Downey

The downside of being a beauty writer is that people always assume that I’m judging them—that their makeup is not enough or too much, or that the products they are using are somehow the wrong ones. The truth is I’m always curious about self-care—because I find infinite delight in the process (most days). When someone pulls lipstick, hand cream, or face wash out of their bag, I want to know what it is, why they use it, and most importantly, if I need it.

Taking care of yourself can be a little treat every day, whether your routine is super simple or totally high maintenance. In this issue, we turned to our readers for their go-to favorites. Not surprisingly, the products are as unique as the readers that use them. Here we take a virtual peek inside their makeup bags. Hope you find your new favorite!

Kristin Heinrich

Kristin always looks fabulous, as any fashion stylist should, but she also manages to look great working out, which is where I usually see her. @Kristin_Heinrich_Style

Kristin’s Faves

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

Vintner’s Daughter Serum

Revision Intellishade Original

Lancome Effacernes Concealer

Le Labo Santal 33

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads

Rauhdah Rahman

Rauhdah’s routine is all about self-care and as a yoga instructor, her daily routine is mostly about serious skin care (skin care junkies run in her family), quick and easy makeup, and a good waterproof mascara.

Rauhdah’s Faves

Milk Makeup Kush Waterproof Mascara

RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up Concealer and Lip2Cheek in Paradise

Charlotte Tilbury Superstar Lips in Pillow Talk

Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cream

Josh Rosebrook Advanced Hydration Mask and Hydrating Accelerator

Ray Wilkinson

Ray’s routine is self-described as simple, but it works for this empty-nester engineer and mom of twin college-age boys. I have known Ray since we were in high school and whatever she is doing, it’s working—she hasn’t changed a bit.

Nell and Clare Downey

College students are usually the Chapstick and mascara types, but I guess if you are my daughters, the beauty bug rubs off on you. People always ask if I ever do their makeup for them and the answer is a big no—thanks to YouTube, this generation knows all the tricks.
