It might have felt a little late coming this year, but fall has finally arrived in the South – which means it’s officially time for one of our favorite seasonal style trends: layering.
We checked in with Brittany Noble Newcomb, wardrobe stylist and owner of B. Noble Styled, to get her favorite tips for transitioning your warm-weather wardrobe for cooler days and chillier nights. Here’s what she said:
Layer Your Favorite Looks
“If you want to master the seasonal transition, lean into the art of layering,” says Brittany. “Shop your closet as if it were a boutique. Pick your favorite pieces and find an innovative way to bring them back to life, adding items that feel like fall.“
Pair your favorite floral dress with an edgy sweatshirt and suddenly it doubles as a “new“ skirt. Layer your favorite crop top over a striped button-down and trousers for a fresh look that gives life to a summer piece for a whole new season. Or try a pretty silk top like the Dahlia Blouse from Daniel Gonzalez underneath a sundress for a bit of added warmth as temperatures slowly fall.

Get a Great Pair of Socks
“One of my favorite cool-weather trends throughout the years and a great way to embrace fall is to find a great pair – or pairs – of socks,“ Brittany says.
Not only is this ultimate autumn accessory super versatile, but many well-known designers have embraced the trend and given us options that make it clear socks aren”t just for sneakers anymore.
Look for old-school athletic stripes, animal prints, metallic sheers, and other fun choices to pair with your platform sandals, loafers, and clogs.
Don’t Put Away the Denim Shorts Just Yet
If you’ve lived in the South long enough, you know it’s not uncommon to get one or two small stretches of summer-like weather even after the leaves have started to turn.
For these days, keep your favorite shorts, a bright bag like the Sayre Sling in red from Taxidermy, and your chicest boots handy. Then, on those 80-degree days, find a creative way to use those pieces for one last hurrah for your summer pieces. (We love Marie Oliver’s Mia Vegan Leather Shorts as a chic transitional choice.)
“Pair shorts with a blazer like the Wingtip 2 Dinner Jacket from Emerson Fry and loafers with socks for a fresh take on simple classics,” says Brittany. ”Wear a denim shirt and jeans with a punchy neon accessory, or turn an oversized white oxford into a dress paired with combat boots.”

The Bottom Line
This is the season of reworking wardrobe staples and classic pieces from your closet, and the options are endless for fashion thrill seekers. Don’t be afraid to mix, match, and try fun new combinations while we wait for new inventory to flow into stores and temperatures to truly drop.
