Artisan Spotlight: The Urban Electric Company

WRITTEN BY Blair Farris

The Peachy team recently had the pleasure of touring the Urban Electric Company’s plant in Charleston. Although the gloomy sky and torrential downpour darkened the city outside, Urban Electric lit up the inside, making it all the easier to see what makes it so special.

UECO2The Urban Electric Company was established 10 years ago to fill a need in the market for high quality, American-made lighting with an elevated and aesthetic design. Its distinguished design, heirloom quality and impeccable service has propelled it into one most recognized lighting companies in the world. Every fixture is made and finished by hand at its corporate headquarters and production studio in Charleston.

UECO04We watched as a master craftsman created each light with patience and precision; the attention to detail is remarkable. This painstaking work results in an exquisite work of art. Urban Electric trains its own artisans and the masters oversee apprentices, ensuring that they use only the finest materials. It was such a treat to see first-hand how the artisans at this renowned Charleston company work with such passion.

Urban Electric offers an extensive collection of nearly 300 interior and exterior fixtures, as well as one of the most extensive custom programs in the lighting industry. The effort that goes into each fixture is extraordinary —lasering the initial pieces out of large sheets, breaking the angles to make them fit, welding each piece together, dipping in acid to create the right finish, and powder coating with fabulous colors.

UECO03Take a few moments to watch the videos that feature behind-the-scenes interviews with the unique individuals that make up this world-class team. Complete with blooper reels, our cameras capture the talents, personalities and backgrounds of this eclectic group.
